The Great Barrier Reef, a coral reef located off the coast of Queensland in the northeastern side of Australia, captures the attention of many around the world with its vibrant colors. Home to many different types of species and known as the second largest living ecosystem in the world, tourists can go and dive, snorkel, almost anytime.

Apart from housing a numerous amount of different species, The Great Barrier Reef also has over 900 individual islands stretching across a length of over 2,600 kilometers ( 1,615 miles). It covers such a large area, approximately half the size of Texas, astronauts have caught a glimpse of the strong and vivid blue colors.

Under the reef, around 10% of the total fish population in the world reside within the Great Barrier Reef. 215 species of birds live on one of the many islands to either visit or nest. Over thirty species of whales, dolphins and porpoises also reside in this location.

Notwithstanding its breathtaking beauty, the Great Barrier Reef faces a huge danger. Climate change continues as the biggest threats that the reef faces.

The warm water temperatures causes the corals to put stress on themselves and leads them to coral bleaching. A mass coral bleaching occurred in 2002, when more than 50% of the reefs experienced coral bleaching.

Poorly managed or maybe too much tourism also stands as another threat to the Great Barrier Reef. Thankfully, the management for tourism at the reef exercises well managed practices.

Tourists can stay in a resort on one of the many islands such as the Hamilton Island. For others that enjoy more isolation, the Haggerstone Island seems like the best fit.

The Great Barrier Reef–a breathtaking location for tourists to enjoy their holidays and spend time with the family and friends.
