George Harvey Strait Sr., known as the “King of Country”, an American country music singer, songwriter, and producer, has songs and albums on the top 50 country songs list. He wrote tunes like “All My Exe’s Live in Texas”, “Amarillo by Morning”, “The Chair”, and “I can Still Make Cheyenne”.

Born on May 18, 1952 in Poteet, Texas to John Byron Strait and Doris Jean Couser, George grew up in Pearsall, Frio County, where his father taught middle school mathematics and owned a 2,000 acre cattle ranch near Big Wells, Texas. When Strait entered fourth grade, his father and mother divorced, and his mother moved away with his sister. Afterwards, his father raised him and his brother, John Jr.

Strait began his musical interest while attending Pearsall High School, where he played in a rock and roll garage band. During this time, he had a strong interest for the popular music group The Beatles.

Strait changed his musical preference to country music and singers like Hank Thompson, Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Bob Wills, Hank Williams and Frank Sinatra. He attended live performances, which he said “could be heard in every town in Texas”.

On December 4, 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma. In 1972, living in Hawaii, they had their first child, Jenifer.

In spring 1981, Strait released his first single for MCA Records titled “Unwound”, which climbed to #6 on the BillBoard Hot Country Songs chart that year, and he included it on his debut album Strait Country”.

Later in 1992, Strait came out with the songs “I Cross my Heart”, “Heartland”, andWhen did you Stop Loving Me” From 1994 to 1998, he created the albums “Lead On”, “Clear Blue Sky”, “Carry Your Love With Me”, and “One Step at a Time.”

In early 2000, Strait had numerous #1 hit songs on the Billboard charts. He continues to perform shows everywhere, but has recently decided to not sing live anymore. In 2019 at Rodeo Houston in NRG stadium, he will make one final appearance, his last rodeo.

George Strait, country legend, or the  “King of Country” will have a legacy that lasts forever.
