Inspired by an earlier store success, Sam Walton took a leap of faith and decided to open a store featuring low prices and great service. Walmart now stands as America’s superstore!

Sam Walton opened the first Walmart in 1960 near Roger, Arkansas at age 44. Many competitors believed that his marketing methods would not succeed, but Walton found out he provided what customers wanted. The store soon achieved a booming success, and he started to open other stores across the state and eventually the nation.

Along with the success of Walmart, Walton also opened a store called Sam’s Choice, where customers could purchase bulk items for their large family or social event. This store also gained success for the Walton family, making them one of the most wealthy families in America.

With Walmart’s growing success in the states, Walton decided to expand to new territories like Mexico. With his fearless expanding to other places and low prices, people began honoring Walton with praise. In 1992, former President George H. W. Bush awarded Walton with the Presidential Medal of Honor for his success in business.

After receiving the Presidential Medal of Honor, Walton passed away, but he left an ongoing legacy. Even today, Walmart stands as a retail industry leader, keeping the same motto from the beginning. Through their daily dedication to the business and customers, Walmart employees still honor Walton.

In 2015, Walmart announced a 2.7 billion investment in its two year workforce, raising worker wages to $9.00 an hour, implementing new training programs, and giving associates more personal schedule control. The company’s future goals include better working conditions and upholding Sam Walton’s dream.

During the summer of 2017, a new Walmart Supercenter will open for New Caney residents.
