Members of the West division of the American League of Major League Baseball, the Houston Astros earned their name when they began playing in the Astrodome, mirroring Houston’s involvement in the United States space program.

In 2000, the Astros moved their home stadium to Enron field, later named Minute Maid Park after the Enron scandal and bankruptcy. The Minute Maid Park came with a few interesting features, such as a train that moves across after home runs and a hill in center field holding the flagpole. This hill stood for about sixteen years, and Astros’ ownership replaced it during the 2016-2017 off season.

Although the Astros have a relatively uneventful past, they still earned a moment of fame in 2005 when they played in the World Series against the prediction of even the most loyal Houstonians.  The team started their season with a poor record, but they improved their play in the second half enough to earn the National League wild card spot, moving forward to win against the Atlanta Braves. The Houston Astros continued with this success, eventually securing their spot in the World Series through a win in St. Louis, owing much of their success to a game changing home-run by Albert Pujols and the exceptional pitching effort by Houston’s main pitcher Roy Oswalt.

In the World Series, the Houston Astros battled against the Cincinnati White Sox, bringing the World Series to Texas for the first time in Game 3. Unfortunately, the White Sox swept the Astros, winning all four games. However, this season still remains Houston’s most successful season and remains cherished by long time franchise fans.

A team built and loved in the Greater Houston Area, the Houston Astros have potential to rise back to fame in upcoming seasons.
