For the past 3 years, New Caney High School has focused on recruiting and training new staff members to further improve pedagogy quality at the school. Unlike wise, traditional teachers set in their ways, new, fresh faces bring more modern teaching styles altering the typical classroom setting, which many students find dull. Ms. Carlson, a recent New Caney High School addition, continually proves herself as not only an incredibly successful teacher, but also a progressive innovator too.

Ms. Carlson’s three previous years teaching included many different social study based classes, such as World Geography, Human Geography, World History, Economics, and has sponsored for History Fair. Paired with her broad spectrum of classes and her own American Assassinations class, Ms. Carlson continues reshaping her classroom through actively engaging her students and approaching classroom topics with lively, progressive methods, rather than solely through traditional lectures and note taking.

A rigorous history course load with a History and Secondary Education major from the prominent Roger Williams University prepared her well for a teaching career. While earning her degree, Ms. Carlson also immersed herself in sailing that she still coaches outside of school. Her award winning performances gave her an opportune time to almost compete in the Olympics.

Inside her classroom, Ms. Carlson’s teaching style has proven successful by allowing her students engaging opportunities through required lesson reflection or projects about information learned the same day. Rather than lecture students with customary information and have them study for a standard test, students that analyze and evaluate facts through class-wide debates or thought provoking poster presentations promote a deeper and clearer understanding. Out of her six classes, two offer students an opportune time to earn college credit, and they have prepared themselves well through her interactive, yet exalted teaching style.

Ms. Carlson–not an ordinary history teacher, but a marvelous one, enlightening students at New Caney High School!
