Amanda Butler, a devout Christian and Member of Hearts Afire Baptist Church, was recently inspired to organize a get-together for youths aged 14 to 20. Her goal is providing a safe haven and a decent place for teenagers and young adults on Fridays.

“There are no places to go and have fun in New Caney,” she said “and I just feel like the club will be a place where teenagers will have fun, dance, and play games.”

The idea that New Caney lacked a recreation center crossed her mind when she observed that her teenage son and his friends remaining quiet on Friday nights because her husband works on Saturdays and needs much sleep. This meant that the visits were short and not interesting (by teenage standards).

The club is open on each month’s first and third Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and plays strictly contemporary Christian music. Admission is free, and a snack bar sells food and drinks. During the summer, a bash/concert is scheduled with local artists making appearances.

Although associated with a church, the club’s rules are not unreasonably stringent. Indeed, the group only enforces two rules: dress decently (no spaghetti straps) and respect other people.

What holds for the club’s future is unclear, but everyone involved is very optimistic about its success.
